Sulfur Mines Volcano Hike

Hike into the Sierra Negra Volcano

Our Sulfur Mines (Minas de Sufre) Volcano Hiking tour takes you down into the crater of the Sierra Negra volcano on the island of Isabela.

Stairs leading down into the Sierra Negra volcano caldera

Your tour starts with a pickup from your accommodations and climbs up into the highlands of Isabela. You will then descend from the west rim of this giant shield volcano down to the floor of the largest caldera in the Galapagos Islands and one of the largest in the world.

A flat hike across the caldera floor ends with a slight ascent where you will pass steaming fumaroles painted with vibrant yellow sulfur deposits. This is one of the few places in the islands where you can safely witness up close the natural forces that have created the Galapagos islands.
